How to Temporarily Turn Off Internet Windows 10

Hi Niagra,

For WiFi Connections, you can find an Icon on the notification icons(just right of the screen) which you can left click and click the button to turn the WiFi off.

Alternatively, WiFi can also be turned off from Action Center.

I will produce an Image if you can't figure it out.

As far as ethernet is concerned there is no direct way to disable that.

Thank you Sumit Dhiman2 for your reply. I would really appreciate an image of what you mean because when I click on the notification icon it brings me to the action center and my wireless icon is greyed out, even though I am online with my wireless right now.

I opened this by clicking the 2nd Icon from the Right.It says available, which means wifi networks are available, when I click it would turn off.

This one is of action center,again click available and WiFi would be turned off.

The action center button is just left of the time.

As it happens I put a shortcut on my desktop to the Network adapter on my windows 7 that I could right click and toggle ENABLE /DISABLE simple and worked a treat but now I am on Windows 10 I had to figure out how to do the same This is what you need to do.

1) Open the 'Network and Sharing Center' (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Centre)

2) Click 'Change Adapter Settings' in the left hand column

3) You have a windows with just an icon for your Network Adapter (Unless you have more than one that is) :-)

4) Right Click the icon and select 'Create Shortcut' You will be told 'you cant create one here but would you like one on the desktop?' Click YES

5) Ok thats all there is too it. Close all the open windows so you can see your desktop and the shortcut to the Network Adapter.

6) If the Network is ENABLED you will see an option to DISABLE when you right click it.

OK now this is where it has changed from XP 7 & 8. If you right click on the icon agin there is no ENABLE option... Bummer. But all is not lost. for a long time I was having to go to the original icon and right click and it would have the ENABLE option then quite by accident I double clicked the Shortcut on my desktop when my Adapter was DISABLED and lo and behold Up came the message 'Enabeling'...

So all you need do is right click to DISABLE and Double Click to Enable.

I am a little afraid to try that because I did put an ethernet shortcut on my desktop (as you describe) but once I 'disabled' it I could not get back online (had to use the troubleshooter). However, I did not try double clicking the shortcut.

I am in the midst of uploading software and problem solving with a new computer so it may take a couple of days before I try, but I will and I will mark your response accordingly once I do.

In the interim I am using wireless because I can disconnect and reconnect from that as per the previous suggestion from Sumit.

Yes I had the same problem and could not Enable it again from the shortcut desktop icon and had to go to the original icon and right click that.

The double click seems to work for me and like you said, it so useful being abl;e to turn the adapter on and off.

IT DOES NOT WORK

My appologies to all. I could of sworn double clicking worked and had done that on more rthan one occasion but yesterday it did not nor could I get it too. Sorry.

My system's fully up to date as of 8/11 AM, and same for me.   Double-clicking the desktop icon just pops up its status dialog, BUT, from the icon's right-click (context) menu, if one selects Open file location, one can then enable the connection from that.  It's just one more step.  C'mon, Microsoft, just fix the propagation of Enable to the DT shortcut, so it works as it did in 7SP1! Shouldn't be too hard...

Yes, the same for me. The "cool" thing is, once you have opened "Open file location" the short cut gets the "Activate" entry (in German it's called "Aktivieren")?!

you could create a small batch file to toggle between the two states, then create a shortcut to run as administrator.

1) right click on desktop and select new - > text document.

2) edit the text document and paste the following

@echo off

if not exist "c:\1.txt" goto :disable else goto :quit

:quit
netsh interface set interface name="Ethernet" admin=enabled
del c:\1.txt /q
exit

:disable
netsh interface set interface name="Ethernet" admin=Disabled
echo "NIC Disabled!" > c:\1.txt
exit

Notes for info - creates a tiny file called 1.txt in the route of drive C when the NIC is disabled (just because I find it easier to look for that than to try to figure out what state the NIC is in)

"Ethernet" should be substituted for the name of your NIC (quotes are required)

3) save as toggleNIC.bat (or name of your choice.bat) to a location of your choice (make a note of the location).

4) right click on desktop, select new -> shortcut

5) enter the full path to your .bat file (or browse to it), click next, give it a name, click finish.

6)right click on shortcut, select properties, click on shortcut tab, click Advanced button, tick box to Run as administrator.

double click shortcut to turn off NIC, double click shortcut to turn on NIC

Having said all that, Derek, is your shortcut set to run as administrator, if not it might be worth giving that a try first (note 6)
